Appearance: Nikolai is tall for human men of his time, standing at about 5’11, but no giant by faerie standards. He has a body like a whip, quick and light and not yet filled out with age and experience. He could be described as very fit, but boyish. At nineteen years old, he still cannot grow a beard, which is the subject of frequent self-scrutiny and insecurity. His hair is dark brown and stick-straight, falling approximately to his ears in his neglect to care for it. Eyes of mingled blue, gray and brown (the proportions of which differ significantly between the right and left) rove continuously over his surroundings, classifying and filing away. His skin is moderately tanned, with only a few blemishes but several notable scars: one on his left hand from the base of his pinkie to the bottommost knuckle of his thumb, one across his right bicep (these two were both sustained in sword practice), and one on his right calf, where a wolf got hold of him as a child. Considered extremely handsome by human standards, he is nonetheless an obvious garlanger.

Personality: Having grown up in a highly political world, Nikolai does not disdain politics in themselves, but neither does he understand those who prefer thinking to doing. With a tendency to shoot first and ask questions later, the boy has often found himself in precarious situations which he survived largely by luck, though tenacity did play a part. Somewhat surprisingly, Nikolai does not have much of a temper to compliment his spontaneity and love of conflict, but he is impatient, and suffers no fools. Though he has no love for the overly intellectual, he considers himself a scholar of common sense and holds those who abide by the laws of reality to be the truly wise.
Overall, Nikolai is brave, sometimes to a fault, and wont to look for a cause to support, even if it does not align directly with his interests. He has a weakness for those who ask him for help, can be a victim of his own pride, and wants nothing so much as to play the hero.

*History: Nineteen years is not much history, but Nikolai has filled them more than many would. Born into a noble Russian family in the early-19th century, Nikolai experienced both the heights of aristocratic pleasures and the horrors of wartime conflict. Eager to enlist, he was prevented from joining any branch of the military by his protective family, and took to aggressively training with his instructors to ease this affront to his pride. When he felt his abilities had reached their peak, he ran away from home to join up with a nearby regiment, only to find himself instead transported to Alanor.
